Frequently Asked Questions

At VS FOCUM, we are distinguished by providing comprehensive firefighting support, merging innovation and customization beyond researching and developing firefighting foams.

1. What inspections should I perform on the firefighting foams in my fire protection installation?

Foams must be evaluated at least annually to confirm they retain extinguishing capacity and key properties.

Under the RIPCI Regulation (Fire Protection Installations Regulation – Royal Decree 513/2017):

  • Fixed foam extinguishing systems comply with UNE-EN 13565-2 (design and installation).
  • Components comply with UNE-EN 13565-1.
  • High, medium, and low-expansion foams comply with UNE-EN 1568-1 to 4.

RIPCI requires annual and five-year inspections. Annual checks verify that the foam has not degraded.

The standard UNE-EN 13565-2 (section 11.3.2.4) specifies annual quality tests for foam:

  • Foam type.
  • Specific gravity (density).
  • pH.
  • Undissolved solids/sediments.
  • Drainage time and expansion index.
  • Polar solvent resistance for AR foams (fire test with acetone as fuel).
2. How to perform a correct foam sampling?

The sample must be representative of the tank contents.

Recommendations:

  • Ideally, recirculate the tank before sampling.
  • If recirculation is not possible, take samples from the top and bottom, then homogenize them.
  • If neither is feasible, run foam from the outlet until flow is uniform before collecting the sample.

Incorrect sampling can lead to false failures (rejecting foam that still meets specifications).

Use clean, dry, properly labelled containers. Seal hermetically and maintain conditions during storage and transport.

3. Can I mix firefighting foams of different types or brands?

To confirm compatibility, always consult the manufacturer. Only they can perform specific tests to verify the products can be mixed safely.

Even with manufacturer approval, before mixing check that:

  • Both foams are in good condition and retain their original properties.
  • They are compatible in application type and dosing rate.
